Trichromatic Color Matching

This exercise bears similarity to experiments performed since the beginning of the 20th century. With the aim of quantifying the human perception of colors they resulted in the development of the CIE 1931 XYZ color space [SG31, pp. 74ff.], which is still used today in the field of colorimetry. The experiments in turn make use of theoretical foundations developed by Hermann G. Grassmann in the 19th century, who among other things described how colors can be expressed as the sum of three components [Co01, pp. 36f., p. 122, p. 156].
